Why is my site slow?

After the long ongoing battle with our website - homeaccessgrant.com. We have finally found what the problem was:
We had gzipping on within joomla which seemed to slow down the ixxocart part of our website down a lot and overload our server.
I though I would just let you know in case anyone else has a similar problem.
